Point ChatGPT or Claude at your actual Traeger cooks
There's a new wave of "AI grilling," and most of it is about the grill making the decisions for you. That's one idea. Here's a different one you might actually want: to ask the AI you already use — ChatGPT or Claude — about your cooks. "How's the brisket doing, and when will it hit 203°?" "Why did Saturday's ribs stall an hour longer than the batch before?" "Plan me a 12-pound brisket to serve at six." Those questions need one thing a chatbot doesn't have on its own: your grill's data. That's what Smokelog's AI connection adds.
Two different ideas of "AI grilling"
They solve different problems, and it's worth being clear about which one you're after.
| Approach | What it does | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Brisk It Vera | Generative AI that writes recipes and runs the cook for you — sets the temperature, manages timers, adjusts on the fly. | A Brisk It smart grill (Origin or Zelos). It's a new appliance, not an add-on to your Traeger. |
| Alexa / Google on a Traeger | Voice control of your existing Traeger — set a temp, ask the current status out loud. | A WiFire Traeger. Handy, but it has no memory: it can't tell you anything about last month's brisket. |
| Smokelog + your AI | Puts your cook history into ChatGPT or Claude so you can ask about a live cook, get an honest debrief, and plan the next one from your own past data. | The Traeger WiFire grill you already own. $5/month, no new hardware. |
Vera is genuinely clever, and if you're buying a new grill and want it to cook for you, it's a real option. But if you already own a Traeger and what you want is to understand your cooks — not hand them over — the job is different, and so is the tool.
What you can actually ask
Once your Smokelog account is connected, the assistant can see the same cook data your dashboard shows — and nothing else. A few things people ask:
- Mid-cook, from the couch: "How's my cook going?" — it reads the live grill temp, every probe, and the pellet level, and can estimate when a probe will hit target from how this cook is actually climbing.
- The honest debrief: "Why did this brisket take two hours longer than the last one?" — it pulls both cooks, compares the stalls, and factors in the weather Smokelog logged at your grill.
- Planning: "Build me a plan for a 12-pound brisket to serve Saturday at six" — grounded in the times your grill actually took before, not a generic number off the internet.
- Journaling, hands-free: "Mark that I just wrapped the ribs" — drops a note on the cook's timeline without you touching a greasy screen.
How to connect it
It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol) — the open standard both Claude and ChatGPT now use to connect to outside data, the same way people plug in their calendar, notes, or CRM. Setup is a copy-and-paste:
- Connect your Traeger to Smokelog once — that's the normal setup, and it starts recording your cooks.
- Open your Connect your AI page and copy your personal link.
- Paste it into Claude or ChatGPT as a custom connector. Added once, it works in their phone apps too — which is where you'll use it, standing at the grill.
Where we draw the line
Smokelog's AI connection reads your cook data, keeps your notes, and helps you plan — it isn't an autopilot. It doesn't run the cook for you or change your grill's settings on its own, and that's the line between this and the "AI cooks for you" grills: you stay in the driver's seat, with your own data inside the assistant you already talk to. A smoker is a 500° appliance, so anything that ever reaches back to the grill is something we'd put behind your own explicit say-so — deliberately, not on a whim.
